Madres

"Ah, Mother's Day! A day for moms to empty the dishwasher, fill the dishwasher, do the laundry, make the beds, prepare breakfast, empty the trash, make the bottles... while Dad takes a well deserved nap. I wonder what we'll do on Father's Day?"

A day at the races

My pony didn't win but all the pomp and circumstance was fantastic! Next year I am going to play it like my great grandmother who would apparently bet on every single horse that way she was always a winner. Smooth Great Grand, smooth.

The 1st Saturday in May

Have you put your money down on the ponies yet? I still haven't figured out who I like. Maybe Pants on Fire, that's just because I can't wait to hear the announcers say that over and over again.
For those needing to flush out the back story on the Kentucky Derby so that you sound like winner to your friends you should really rent the documentary The First Saturday in May. The story follows 6 horses and their trainers on their journey to the Derby. As it turns out one of the horse they were following that year was Barbaro.

Good luck to you, enjoy a julep and Happy Mothers Day!

All the Pretty Horses

These beautiful images of horses are so fantastic as statement art. Also they get me excited for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday!

Calypso at Target

Oh Calypso how I love thee! The whole eclectic, beachy, bohemian, relaxed glamour thing you have going on appeals to me on every level except the pricing. So, imagine how excited I was to hear that they would be doing a collection for Tarjay. I was especially jazzed after visiting the Calypso Home store in LA and seeing so many wonderful things.

And man did they put out an ad campaign for this one - I bet you have have been humming that jingle from the commercials where they talk about going to the plage. So French and tres, tres, tres chic (see Mom and Dad I do use my high school French)! There were even full page ads in my favorite mags.

On Monday night I had to make a Target run for some cold medicine and a bundt pan and so I steered the wheels of my cart towards the home section. Those silver poufs had caught my eye and I was thinking they would be great in a little girls room.

But this was all that was there. See that bottom row - that's where the poufs should have been, and those candles, they smelled kind of funky and not in a "let's get down tonight" kind of way. Quel dommage.

Don't worry though, I still had a full cart load of Target items. When I pulled up to the checkout, the checker (a teenage girl) started processing my stuff and then looked up at me and said "Kind of a random assortment of stuff." Now usually this would tick me off and kind of embarrass me as I like to think that when you are buying thing the sales people are not secretly passing judgment on your selections, apparently not true! BUT in this case I just replied back to her "Well, isn't that the evil genius of Target that you come in for one thing and end up with $100 worth of stuff you didn't need?"

As I crossed through those automatic double doors and into the parking lot I said a little prayer for my sister, who has two kiddos and not a Target in sight.

Red, White and Blue Times Two!

"I'm sorry, what? I am having twins????!!!"

So when I first discovered that I would be having identical twins, naturally, (after freaking out for about a week and then being completely elated) my thoughts turned to their nursery. Where was I going to put these two?
What would it look like?

After I found out that the twins were boys, I started brain storming. I wanted something masculine, timeless, and unexpected. My entire jumping off point started with one fabric that I found while browsing around Denver.
It is this retro cowboy print.

When I first thought about doing a"cowboy" or "western" inspired room, I had to force myself to think outside the box, to do it in a way that was unexpected, tailored, and functional. Once I found the cowboy print, I began to find accent fabrics to incorporate into the design so that I could begin to sort out how to use each.
I came up with a traditional hounds tooth in an nontraditional color way and a blue Ikat to balance with the traditional pieces. Eventually, I decided to place the cowboys only on the windows and trim them with the hounds tooth. The ikat became accent pillows.

The treatment of the walls and ceiling opened a whole nother can of worms!
I used rough but pine boards with a semi transparent, grey stain on them to make the tray ceiling appear like an old barn. To balance with some clean lines, I added some traditional, custom wainscoting, but in a simple, modern pattern and shape to lighten the room and balance the wood.
Combined with traditional, wooden spindle cribs in a modern paint finish, with contemporary bedding and voila!

We decided to fill the space with two gliders since there would be two babies, complete with cowboy pillows knitted by the boys' great grandmother, and a vintage garden cart found at a local antique store for the changing table.

The beautiful horse paintings were commissioned by a local artist (who happens to be a close relative) I wanted the art to be simple, yet meaningful. These horses do just the trick.
Finished off with some wood accents, a cowhide rug and some good old Patriotic art and my boys' nursery was born!

Whew we made it!
Happy Tuesday!

We're Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

Yes. I know that this picture is upside down. But that is the way that Brit sent it to me and even though I know it's just an iPhone/gmail quirk (anyone else have this problem?) it is also a pretty good visual representation for how life has been for the past couple of months.

Much better! Here are the boys - Nash, big brother Hudson (who turned 2!) and Hayes.
So we are back on the interwebs, bloggin'. And we are still fancying things up - a few completed projects to show you and a couple in the works so if you are looking for decorating help shoot us an email brittany@hudsonbabydesign.com.

See ya domani!
